Seedling avocados can take 5–7 years, but grafted nursery trees (Red Sun’s specialty) generally produce in 3 years under good management.

The best time is at the start of the rainy season (September–November in South Africa). This ensures strong root establishment before the dry season.

Avocados prefer:

• Well-drained, deep soils (avoid waterlogging).
• Slightly acidic conditions (pH 5.5–6.5).
• Frost-free areas with moderate temperatures.
• Sloped land is ideal for drainage, and windbreaks help protect the trees.

The ‘Hass’ variety dominates globally and is the most profitable. Locally, Fuerte remains important for early-season markets. Red Sun provides both, with clonal rootstocks that boost uniformity, disease resistance, and yield.

Avocados are extremely profitable due to strong global demand, especially in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Returns of R150,000–R250,000 per hectare annually are achievable in mature orchards, depending on yield and export access.

The United States and the European Union are the biggest avocado importers, with India emerging as a fast-growing market.

They thrive in subtropical climates with summer rainfall. In South Africa, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal are the main producing regions. Globally, Mexico, Peru, and Kenya lead the industry.
