For decades, the scientific community has searched for a widely recyclable, re-usable alternative to plastic. Now, avocados have been harnessed to create an eco-friendly food packaging prototype, unveiled by the Universidad de Córdoba with support from the Universitat de Girona in Spain.
By using fibres from avocado tree residue, researchers have created a material that replaces some of the bioplastic, biopolyethylene, used in food packaging. This new, avocado-based compound is biodegradable, meaning a greener, more sustainable solution. ♻️
As the European Parliament aims to phase out some forms of single-use plastic packaging by 2030, we love to see the humble avocado play an important role in innovative research!
